KARACHI: Pakistani media outlets have once again unanimously rejected the proposed Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA), calling it a “tough attempt” to suppress the press.
The joint committee includes All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA), Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ). And the Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AMEND).
In a statement issued Monday, he sought to give the Ministry of Information the impression that journalists were not strongly opposed to the PMDA.
The recent minutes circulating between the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and these organizations are misleading and have been deliberately distorted to give the impression that there is no serious objection to the PMDA, the statement added.
All the delegates agreed to reject the draft PMDA.
He said the ministry was constantly trying to give the impression that sections of the media community were supporting the ministry in its crackdown on the press. “It should be shut down immediately.”
The joint committee is calling on all human rights groups, bar associations, members of parliament and other sections of civil society to impose more restrictions on the media to curb the current government’s provocative move.
