Artita praised Oggard’s leadership in reviving Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta praised Martin Odigard’s leadership qualities on Tuesday (September 21) when the Norwegian midfielder was instrumental in reviving Arsenal’s Premier League campaign from a poor start.

Oddygard’s pinpoint free kick gave the Gunners a 1-0 victory at Burnley last weekend as Arsenal responded to losing their first three games in the league.

Odigard, 22, joined Real Madrid permanently from Real Madrid for 30 30m (US 41 41m) in August after suffering a loan spell last season, participating in 20 matches.

“We are building some leadership in the group,” Artita said ahead of Wednesday’s tie against third-seeded AFC Wimbledon in the third round of the league group.

“Martin has the ability to take the ball with his abilities, where others might refuse, but also with his demeanor, rhythm and the way he presses.”

Arsenal also have two clean sheets in a row after scoring nine goals in their three defeats, beating Norwich 1-0 in the UAE before enduring Burnley’s physicality.

Artita credits Odigard – who captains his country – for example.

Reflecting on Arsenal’s defensive work, Spinard added: “He is probably the first person.

“It was a real commitment and purpose. You can tell when you’re really doing it or when you’re being asked to do it. There was a big meaning behind it.”

Arseta are under pressure to deliver after a disappointing eighth place in the Premier League in 2020/21 and enduring the worst start to the league’s campaign in 67 years this season.

Fans were furious after the club’s slow start to the season, echoing around the Emirates Stadium following Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat.

But Artita – who was reportedly given four games to save his job after the last international window – acknowledged the relationship between players and supporters after the Burnley game.

“There was some connection building. The players have to appreciate it,” Artita said.

“It just brings more harmony, more connectivity and a closer relationship – which will definitely strengthen the team.”
