LAHORE: PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif has said that the government should withdraw the proposed increase in gas prices.
On his official Twitter handle, the opposition leader said: “The last fiscal budget was the budget of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The government is only fulfilling the conditions set by the IMF.”
Sharif added that the government lied to the nation about the “tax-free budget”.
“We highlighted earlier that inflation and taxes will increase after the budget,” he said. “The government has proved us right,” he added.
He called rising gas prices “unjustified” and “another foolish act” by the government.
“People can’t afford more inflation. Oppression must stop after oppression,” Sharif stressed.
He said there had been a “historic” rise in gas and electricity prices and Prime Minister Imran Khan had been criticized for creating “civil war-like conditions” with “one stupid decision after another”.
The leader said that raising prices would not solve the problem. “The main problem is the incompetence and corruption of the rulers.”
The PML-N leader said that increase in electricity and gas prices would make people’s lives more difficult while increase in gas prices would make bread more expensive and increase the monthly bills of consumers.
“We have said before that the government has dragged 9/11 on the economy,” the opposition leader said.
Sharif said that Prime Minister Imran Khan should resign instead of increasing the pressure of inflation.
How long will Pakistanis suffer the consequences of Imran Khan’s incompetence? He continued.
He said the government had already increased the price of gas by 141 per cent, adding that the gas companies had collapsed “due to Imran Khan’s incompetence”.
The Leader of the Opposition said that Pakistan was buying the most expensive LNG in the world while electricity and gas prices in Pakistan were also the most expensive in South Asia.
Sharif said that Pakistan has the highest inflation rate and the lowest income in the world.
