Lausanne: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Wednesday that the Winter Olympics in Beijing next year will be held without foreign spectators, with tickets limited to spectators living in China.

Only fully vaccinated participants will be exempt from the 21-day quarantine, the IOC said. The cases of athletes who can provide “legitimate medical exemptions” will be considered.

All attendees will enter a tight bubble upon arrival, covering sports-related areas and stadiums, as well as accommodation, catering, and opening and closing ceremonies.

Decisions announced by the IOC but taken by Chinese organizers predict a package of measures to be released in October to prevent sports from becoming a source of pollution.

After a one-year delay due to the global health crisis, spectators at the Tokyo 2020 Games were banned in almost all places.

All domestic and international sports participants and the manpower in the bubble, known as the “closed loop management system”, will be tested daily.

The 2022 Beijing Olympics are scheduled for February 4-20.
