Madrid:

Real Madrid suffered their “worst defeat of the season”, according to coach Carlo Ancelotti, after suffering a setback with their first league defeat of the Champions League season, losing 2-1 at Espanyol on Sunday.

Real, who lost to Moldovan Sheriff’s Terraspol on Tuesday, missed out on a chance to overtake Atletico Madrid, who beat crisis-hit Barcelona 2-0 on Saturday to draw 17 points with their city rivals. ۔

Real Sociedad are also at 17 points after a 1-1 draw at Getafe on Sunday.

“There’s not much to say,” said Anstelli, admitting after a defeat that left Real without a win in three matches when they were level without a goal at the hands of Villarreal in their previous league match.

“We didn’t manage to stay calm, we didn’t manage to get what we planned. The team wasn’t set up well with or without the ball.

“You have to be honest. This is the worst game of our season.”

Espanyol took the lead in the 17th minute at the RCDE Stadium in Catalonia when Ra ڈیl de Tomas netted.

Alex Waddell scored the second goal, naming Nacho, and 15 minutes into the second half Real’s keeper Thibaut Courtois hit the ball.

Karim Benzema put the ball into the net early in the second half but Luka Jovic’s offside goal was disallowed.

As Espanyol were about to extend their lead again, with Benzema scoring a goal in the 71st minute, the French international fired into the bottom corner after collecting a pass from Joachim for his ninth league goal in eight games this season. ۔

Espanyol have won just once in seven games this season, but they struggled in five minutes of extra time to take all three points.

“We now need to use the international break to think about why the team’s attitude has changed in less than a week,” Ancelotti said.

“But this defeat is not an accident. We did not play well.”

Sociedad’s victory would have taken them to the top of the table, but Michael O’Brien equalized in the 68th minute and five minutes before handtime, the Centra Ramirez opener had to overcome a point to cancel for Getafe.

Point was Getafe’s first of the season after seven straight losses.

One goal in each half by Dutch international Arnaut Danjoma saw Villarreal beat Real Betis 2-0 at the hands of Manchester United in the Champions League, while Dario Benedetto’s lone strike beat Elche 1-0. Conquest of Celta Vigo
