Santiago: Chile has announced that it will begin vaccinating children three years of age and older against the corona virus after successfully vaccinating 90% of its initial target population.

The Public Health Institute said that under the new rollout, children will receive Chinese Corona Weekshot, which is already used for children between the ages of six and 15.

For children ages 16 to 18, Chile uses the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine.

The institute said the decision to use different shots was based on a study by Corona Week in China, which found that older children with the Chinese vaccine had a higher rate of adverse reactions than younger children.

Chile is involved in vaccinating three-year-olds, along with Venezuela, Colombia and neighboring Argentina.

Nicaragua and Cuba are vaccinating two-year-olds.

Young children will also be vaccinated in Europe, where the EU’s drug regulator on Thursday cleared the Pfizer / BioNTech shot for use in children between the ages of five and 11.

Chile, with a population of 19 million, has so far vaccinated about 13.8 million people, more than 90% of the target for adults aged 18 and over.

According to official figures, about 1.75 million people in Chile have been infected with the virus and 38,000 have died.
