KYIV: Three people were killed and 12 others were injured in a Russian attack on a town in the northern Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi on Wednesday, emergency services said. AFP.

A spokesman said a strike in Novgorod-Seversky had killed three of us and injured 12.

The town is located in the northeastern corner of the country, about 45 kilometers (28 miles) south of the Russian border.

In a telegram posting, Chernivtsi Governor Vyacheslav Chas said there were “dead and wounded” but did not give a number, saying only that aid workers and paramedics were “working on the scene”.

He said the strike took place at night and damaged “critical infrastructure” in the town, including a school posting pictures of badly damaged buildings.

Other administrative buildings and private houses were also damaged, he said.

Earlier, the Ukrainian military said Russia had “fired artillery shells” at the Chernegyu area.

Before the war, the population of Nogorod-Seversky was about 15,000.

Russia’s offensive against Ukraine has been heavily targeted since its inception, with the Cherniyev region having seen fewer attacks in recent weeks than other eastern regions.
