Shopping online is one of the greatest aspects of the internet today. Online shopping, in layman’s language, means shopping in the comfort of your home. It is a form of electronic commerce whereby consumers directly buy goods or services from a seller over the Internet without an intermediary service.
Online shopping can also be done just about any time, day or night, and it does not matter whether a brick-and-mortar store is open (Hong, Thong, & Tam, 2005). A consumer finds a product by visiting the website, of the retailer, which enables the customer to browse the firm’s range of products and services, view photos or images of products, along with information about the product specifications, features and prices.
Anything can be purchased online starting from grocery and greeting cards to cell phones. But most people buy grocery and rail or air tickets online.
To buy anything online, we have to go through some steps. First, search for a product using google shopping. Second, find the product you like and want to buy. Third, search that product using Google.
Next, add that product to the cart. After adding the product to the cart, you will be given two options i.e., continue shopping and proceed to check out. If you do not want to buy anything else, simply click the option saying proceed to checkout. Next, you have to complete all the boxes saying asterisk.
It includes your name, address, contact number, etc. Some sites want you to make the account and some do not. After adding all the information, you will be given an option to review the order. This is the chance to make sure that you have ordered the right product and entered the right information.
If everything is all right, click continue to go to the next step that is payment. You can choose whether you have to pay using your credit card or pay at the time of delivery. If you want to use a credit card, enter the details required. Once you have done, click confirm the order and your order will be placed.
By choosing to shop online people can enjoy many benefits. One of the major benefits is that it usually available 24 hours a day and most of the consumers have Internet access both at work and at home.
So the time does not act as a barrier on the way of shopping. Another benefit is that customers do not have to stand in long queues to pay for the products that have been bought by them.
Also, they do not have to waste time travelling, they can simply buy at home. Another advantage is that online stores describe products for sales with text, photos, and multimedia files. Moreover, we can read product reviews, written either by experts or fellows online shoppers.
Despite the many benefits of online shopping, this mode of purchase has some significant drawbacks. The major drawback is the delay in delivery. Long duration and lack of proper management results in the delay of delivery.
Although it does not take more than 15 minutes while buying but the delivery takes place in about 1 to 3 weeks. This problem frustrates the customer and prevents him from buying online. Also, the lack of touch-feel tries creates concern over the quality of the product. Moreover, the electronic images of a product are sometimes misleading.
Sometimes the products are changed and you do not receive the original one. Also, you can not return the product once you have removed the packing. Another drawback is FRAUD. Online payments are not secured. Also, the rate of cybercrimes has been increasing and customer’s credit card details have been misused which raises privacy issues.
In conclusion, shopping online has many benefits for people, it helps to save time and money. Also, it has variety and is convenient for people. The availability of online shopping has produced a more educated consumer that can shop around with relative ease and without spending a large amount of time.
In exchange, online shopping has opened doors for small retailers which would not be possible the other way round. Yet the frauds and other problems restrain people from shopping online. However, it is your choice to select whether it is useful for you or not.
